Policy issues:
Gregg Mentioned something about Getting our web page going. Gregg proposed to change CCC to
CCC.ucla.edu . All agreed.
Gregg : Noticed that the secure ID pad from AIS will be dropping Security - All of our secure id
cards will expire at the end of the year.
They May be looking at digital certificates - Cryptographic Keys PGP - for web based
transactions allows client to be identified. Will copy the list on email. -- Don Worth Heading
Authentication. More information needed`- we would like to be better informed on these issues
Capital programs = needs to plan for technology :
Gregg will Contact Jack Poasic and see if we can set up a meeting on Capital and facilities
planning for technology.
OAC = Offered to investigate Y 2 K Problems and will do leg work - If we can pull a list
together : Jason made the offer to pull together a list from our group and forward it on to Gregg -
we would like to add or integrate CSC Y2K issues on to the existing Y2K page.
We want to Set up sub group - Campus computer committee : Of our group consisting of members of
our staff to handle Campus Security Issues. If you may have someone on your staff who would be
interested in this area Please select someone and send their names to Gregg. One of there first
issues will be to get a chair and meet. They don't need a ton of people just a representative body
to form so they can talk with who-ever becomes the new campus security officer, some areas of
potential trouble: Unix, PC, Network Security, Please send names of people to Gregg from your staff
:
Broad agreement : For central services The main client should be the CSC community:
If you want to look at ultimate customer then we are the contact between faculty = The central
services unit will provide us with consulting services or providing cycles.
We are new - Never was a group like us at the same time we have a new direction for central
computing. We have broad representation and provide a point of contact. See how central computing
can reach us as a primary center.
Potential Roles for OAC:
- Co-ordinating role:
- Super computer
- Statistical computing
- Class instruction
Marsha Smith :
Software licensing, High speed computing, grant applications Statistical Consulting - very
successful
Marsha Smith - talk. What should OAC be doing :
Issues of Central computing = Verses local computing.
Hard to make organizational changes in a model that provided cycles
95 IRCC report = networking should move to telecommunications
BOL remote moved to telecomm split services
Two acting directors Barry Beckerman (sp?)
Ben Goldstien = Charged with Transition.
IT strategic planning process Coopers and Lybrand
All BOL move to telecommunications -
Viability as Partner in Super Computer Center - Under Question
Faced with: How can OAC provide value:
Organizationally , Budgetiarially, focus lost
- indirect funding as IBM fizzled,
- Not enough revenue = 9 million to 4 million
Mission Statement needed to Map reality,
Cultural Problem - put an ear out to the world
Staff support for AITB
Focus Research and technology for Instruction.
Organization of technology = Matrix way we really work in technology:
Only reporting relationships - have meaning.
New EVC - New CIO hard to organize when these many decisions are still up in the air.
Marsha - wants to share responsity with management
Paul Hoffman- Research technology services - Main Frame cycles
Kent Wada - Instructional
Ester Woo -
Action Plan - Put on paper services - where to head
Steering committee - Very useful -
NO focus and integrating principle - Lost focus:
Where should OAC be - too many services.
What it is and why :
- Economies of scale
- Cross departmental efforts
- Continually re-evaluated : Specialized services quickly out-dated
What don't we do ?
Marsha distributed - Matrix
Critical to keep committee small representational and effective
Critical to keep CSC smaller -
Copenhaver curricular communication - depends upon undergraduate labs Purchasing their own.
Next steps from this group
Any committee needs implementation ARM
Would like to see : More communications Develop presentations:
Follow up:
Consultant in Training Staff to Staff meetings
Can provide effective cross consulting.
